The numerous controversial issues surrounding gays and lesbians, including same-sex marriage, adoptions, and school gay-straight alliances, have brought sexual orientation and homophobia to the front of American social conscience. Although gays and lesbians seem to be more visible in the United States and media images of gays and lesbians have become familiar, violence against gays and lesbians continues to rise and anti-gay measures are common in the political arena. However the question that Americans often have is: what exactly is it that the LGBT community wants? The answer is simple. LGBT want the same chance as everyone else to pursue health and happiness, earn a living, be safe in their communities, serve their country, and take care of the ones they love. The main issue concerning LGBT people is â€Å"coming out†, which is the process of understanding, accepting, and valuing one’s sexual orientation/identity. Coming out includes both exploring one’s ident ity and sharing that identity with others. LGBT individuals have to deal with what it means to be different in a society that tends to assume everyone to be heterosexual and that tends to judge differences from the norm in negative ways. This process creates cognitive dissonance within the person. Because society teaches that the norm is to feel attraction to people of the opposite sex, when a person experiences the opposite feeling finds him/herself in a state of confusion, discomfort and fear of rejection. The most prevalent lessons that my community has taught me is that silence is an enabler. I was born and raised in the Logan Square community where several Latinos reside. Chicago is home to more than 1,782,423 Latinos, and among that population, a few hundred of those individuals call Logan square home. I have witnessed silence imprison people of this community which has allowed injustices to occur. Of the several oppressions that occur within my community, sexism often times is ignored. Dramatic works Essay The life of Christopher Marlowe was filled with many questions as well as his death. Christopher Marlowe was a play writer and a poet during the same years of William Shakespeare. Some Scholars also believe that Marlowe may have influenced Shakespeare with his own writings. Although this is not for certain, but quite possible being that they both went to the same college. His plays were not properly documented and also were not properly chronologically ordered. Christopher Marlowes most notable plays are: Tamburlaine the Great, The Jew of Malta, Edward II, and Dr. Faustus. In his time of life it is seen that Marlowe was not very well liked by most but his writings were a foundation for many other poets and play writers to build upon. Marlowe was born in 1564 in the town of Canterbury. His father, being a shoemaker did not keep down in social status. He was recognized for his intelligence and went to Kings School. This was most likely a prestigious academy for what may be assumed as the school for the aristocrats during this time. After he finished school he was awarded a scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where he and Shakespeare attended. Furthermore, Shakespeare and Marlowe were born on the same here, so many consider the two somewhat of a rivalry. At Cambridge he studied theology, philosophy, and history. Marlowe later disappeared at this point in his life; at least from society. Cambridge records have him leaving school but there is theory that he was recruited by the government for espionage work. Marlowe received his degree after academic years that included long, unexplained absences, only at the intervention of the Privy Council, on grounds of his unspecified good service to the nation. The privy council is a body of officials and dignitaries chosen by the British monarch as an advisory council to the Crown. More than likely, this service involved posing as a Roman Catholic. In Tudor England, religion and politics were one. The country was in danger on one side by Catholics who had support from Spain and France, they were Englands two greatest enemies during the time, and pressured on the other side by Puritan extremists who viewed the official Church of England as too dangerously close to Roman Catholicism. Elizabeths advisers maintained an elaborate network of agents and couriers, to keep tabs on one another and on these heretical Puritans; more than one of Marlowes Cambridge classmates ended up martyred, a person who willingly suffers death rather than renounce his or her religion, or in exile. Marlowes dramatic career was only to span six short years. In that time he wrote The Jew of Malta, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, The Queen of Carthage, Edward II, and The Massacre at Paris. His work ranged from tragedy to historical drama, but he also wrote popular poetry such as Hero and Leander, and The Passionate Shepherd. His great contribution to English theatre was the use of blank verse in writing his dramatic works and he was the first to use blank verse in drama. Blank verse is any verse comprised of unrhymed lines all in the same meter, usually iambic pentameter. It was developed in Italy and became widely used during the Renaissance because it resembled classical, unrhymed poetry. Marlowes demonstrated blank verses range and flexibility and made blank verse the standard for many English writers, including Shakespeare. There is a big mystery of Marlowes death. Nobody truly knows the exact way he died but the most popular one is that he died in a tavern in the town of Deptford. He and his friend, Ingram Frizer, fought over paying the bill (my theory is that Ingram said a momma joke during the fight because soon after) and soon after the fight Marlowe grabbed Ingrams dagger and attacked him from behind. Frizer was able to grab get the dagger from Marlowe and stabbed him fatally in the eye. But the mystery of this whole death is that Marlowe may have in fact faked his death. Different parties, one believing in catastrophism and the other believing in uniformitarianism collided in the 19th century though being in close agreement at the same time. By using the radioisoyope dating method, scientists are able to measure the age of a substance. This method is possible for measuring the invisible radiation emitted by phosphorescent substances. These atoms are called parents, and as it decays it will become a daughter. By knowing the time it takes for an isotope to change from a parent to a daughter, we can measure the time without the interference of effects caused by catastrophism and uniformitarianism. To quickly explain the measuring process, you must take the # of parents and daughters mean in the rock and the percentage of parents remaining should be added to the measuring curve scale to find the amount of half-lives remaining. Fueled by this urgency, pharmaceutical companies have entered agreements with tropical countries promising protection against exclusive bioprospection rights. Unfortunately, these agreements didnt last, and enthusiasm waned.  In some countries, bureaucracy, permits, and access became prohibitively expensive. In addition, new technologies allowed to use powerful combinatorial chemistry techniques to find active molecules without having to slog through the mud in some faraway jungle. As a result, the exploratory search for pharmaceuticals in rainforests dwindled for a while. But the technological advancements which favored synthetic, lab-developed meds are now helping botanical prospectors once again, and a few daring pharmaceutical companies are back in the jungles looking for the next big drug.   The Challenge of Preserving Valuable Rainforests But saving tropical rainforests is no easy task, as poverty-stricken native people try to eke out a living off the lands and many governments throughout the world’s equatorial regions, out of economic desperation as well as greed, allow destructive cattle ranching, farming, and logging. Published in 1872, Le Fanu relates the story of Carmilla from a first person point of view, through four distinct perspectives. The first narrator, an unnamed assistant to Doctor Hesselius, prefaces the story as correspondence of scholarly interest between the Doctor and an â€Å"intelligent lady.† Introducing the story in this manner lays the initial framework for believability. The doctor’s academic interest signifies scientific validity; whereby, the woman’s intelligence implies rationality. In my life, I have had many various influential people, but I would have to say that my Mother has made the biggest impact of all. Most everything that I am today is a outcome of inspirations and instances I have established from my Mother. She has made so many different opportunities presented to me, without which I do not know where I would be. I find my Mother to be a very inspiring person; the reasons for this are infinite. My Mom has been through multiple hardships over the course of her life and throughout it all she has become an exceptionally strong, loving, and wise person. This fact alone amazes me and when compounded with the fact that my Mother, among it all, still manages to have a quick, clever, and upbeat sense of humor I am left fascinated. The things I have learned and continue to learn from my Mother are endless; she has taught me all of the founding principles of my life and for that I am eternally thankful. Though my Mother and I have many discussions on various subjects, within whom I learn many different things, I believe that many of the things I learn from her are discovered and observed from example. This summer would be an instance. Together, we faced many hardships that really pulled and tugged on our relationship. We worked through possibly one of the hardest things a mother could ever go through. It not only brought us closer together, but it made me realize how much she loves me, and how she is always going to be there for me. It is common knowledge that not everyone is perfect, even heroes, and in realizing this I know that I although I wish to be like my Mother in most ways I do not in all. This realization may be one of the most important things I have learned, my Mother has taught me to base my decisions in life not solely on the examples and actions of others but simply on what I gather and learn from the examples and actions of others. In other words, she has taught me not to follow blindly but to make my own decisions based on what I think is important. My relationship with my Mother is something that I treasure above everything else in my life. We are able to play and joke like young children and have serious in depth conversations on some of life hardest subject like mature adults. The various levels that my Mother can reach me on astound me and I think that it is what makes our relationship truly special and what makes her such a wonderful influence.

A Canary for One by Ernest Hemingway The story under consideration is â€Å"A Canary for One† written by Ernest Hemingway. He was an American author and journalist. His economical and understated style had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his life of adventure and his public image influenced later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short story collections, and two non-fiction works. Three novels, four collections of short stories, and three non-fiction works were published posthumously.Many of these are considered classics of American literature. Now I’d like to pass on the story. The title of the story is rather complex. On the one hand it is related to the present which the American lady intends to give to her daughter. And on the other hand it reveals the idea of the woman’s self-centeredness as she doesn’ t cope with her daughter’s feelings and implants her beliefs on the girl. Now I’d like to pass on the theme and ideas of the story. The leading theme of the story is connected with family relationships. There are several ideas in the story which help us to discover meaning of the story.Firstly, The American lady doesn’t even try to understand her daughter’s desire to marry the foreigner as for American women â€Å"Americans make best husbands†, she is too self-imposed. Secondly, the idea of semi-national marriage sounds absurdly, as the author shows us a perfect example of bad relationships between the American husband and wife, who are intended to divorce. Let me give you a brief summary, to reconstruct the events more accurately. It is the story of three people on a journey across Europe. A married couple shares a compartment with a woman who will be visiting her daughter. She is taking the daughter a canary.They are all Americans living in Europ e so their conversation soon becomes easy and revealing, turning to intimate topics, the kind of things one can comfortable confess to strangers on a train. The two women do most of the talking which is about the woman's daughter and the European man she's about to marry. The woman is against it and insists to take her daughter away as the American men are the best husbands, while the second woman’s American husband remains silent. After they arrive to their destination, all three part with each other. The plot of the story is given to engage the reader emotionally.The author sets up an external conflict between the American woman and her daughter. Moreover there is a conflict between values of the woman and the values of the couple. Speaking about the symbols in the novel I should say, that the main symbol is the canary. An amusing similarity begins to surface between the woman and her captive bird as she decidedly affirms disapproval of her daughter's ill-fated union. The b ird symbolizes both dependence of the woman of her beliefs and the daughter of her mother. As for discourse type it should be noted that the story is partly narration, partly description and partly dialogue.The special role is given to narration and dialogue, as through these discourse types that author reveals the atmosphere and the main ideas of the story. What is more it is written in first person perspective. The narrator is the husband but we can realize that only in the middle of the story. The author uses the indirect characterization. The protagonist of the story is the young man who despite being an American is characterized as an Englishman because of wearing braces and his English character which separates him from his wire and the women.The antagonist is the American woman, a middle-aged woman who is characterized with her deafness – not just the reluctance to her anybody else’s opinion but also a physical one. Setting creates a certain mood in the story. T he immediate setting is the compartment. It is extremely hot there â€Å"it was very hot in the train and it was very hot in the lit salon compartment†. The heat, smoke, dust create the sick atmosphere. Shades of grey, brown and black are predominant in the story: â€Å"dusty trees†, â€Å"brown wooden restaurant cars†, â€Å"long cement platform†.The story is written is formal language with infusions of informal one. There are constant repetitions of the word â€Å"American† in the text, which obviously gets a negative connotation here. To sum it up I can say that the story made a great impression on me. It is rather ironical and I am convinced that the ideas which are expressed in the story are very common nowadays. The national bias often mix up marriages. But we all are people and creating boundaries is incorrectly. Besides being deaf to other people’s beliefs and feelings is a straight way to rupture.
